STEVEN CONWAY; Community Volunteer, Activist and Renaissance Man
My name is Steven Conway, and I was born and raised in Oshawa. I moved to Clarington in 1996, as my wife, Kim, and I started building a new life together. We picked Courtice because it had a nice rural and urban mix, and it was close to work. We have two sons; Ryan, 16, and Jack, 9. My professional training is in Graphic Design and Illustration. My interests are varied, which is why I consider myself a bit of a "renaissance man".
I have been volunteering in the community most of my life, as I grew up in a house where my parents led by example and put our community first. Politics was also a family affair. My father ran several times for City Council, and eventually won 2 terms. I follow the local art scene, frequent galleries, theatre and museums; I love the outdoors; and in the past I was quite the competitive athlete. As a Boy Scout leader, I was involved in teaching youth how to survive in the outdoors and respect the environment. "Take only pictures, leave only footprints" was the motto we preached. As a softball coach, I helped several players earn US scholarships, while a few even made it to our National Women's Softball Team. The last few years, I have been coaching my older son's baseball teams in the BNBA and Clarington Orioles' organizations.
I am always open to learning. Our journey through life will be pretty boring if we don't seize the opportunity to improve ourselves and learn new things. I have been taking courses in areas that would benefit my career, my co-workers, my family, and my community. That training has led me to be an advocate for Human Rights; Environmental; and Health & Safety issues.
For a number of years I was fortunate to present a positive Earth Day message in our local schools. I often referred to myself as a "pocket environmentalist"! It was through these initiatives that I started taking a more active role in our Municipal political scene. I was not impressed. There are so many alternatives to an 'EFW' facility, and the process was so terribly flawed, I could not sit quietly and accept this project. I decided that I would either run for change, or move. I love Clarington, and my neighbourhood, and I don't run from challenges - I face them head on. My vision is to create a community where we can "Live, Work, Play" in a safe, healthy and sustainable environment.
