Incineration Is Not The Only Issue
With the incinerator about to go on-line, monitoring emissions and holding Covanta to our high standards of safety will be one of my priorities. It could be both financially and environmentally hazardous to our health. At a cost of around $300 million, plus several million more per year to run, it will cost close to $1/2 billion by the time it comes to the end of it's projected life. Most of that money will leave the country in profits for Covanta; while only about 32 jobs will be created for it's operation. It is expensive and does not solve the real problem; that our society produces too much waste. We need to work to eliminate the waste-to-curb stream, which goes beyond municipal politics, but someone needs to lead the way... Clarington's new slogan is "Leading the way", after all.
As a Ward 1 resident, I see and experience the traffic problems along Courtice Road, between Nash Road and Sandringham Drive. I want to have traffic controls installed to improve the congestion. It will only get worse as more subdivisions are developed. Other issues include: Good jobs - "living wage" jobs; serviced land, without it we can not attract new business; the GO station to Bowmanville, with a station in Courtice; the 407 link; Hydro One's planned transformer station on the Oak Ridges Moraine; and a series of growth studies including the Downtwon Courtice study. These are long-term, and somewhat costly issues. I will work to ensure we have a healthy environment to "live, work, play" in Clarington - and especially Courtice. Neighbours are talking to each other over the fence, or in the garage. If you are talking about other concerns, they are your issues. I want to hear about them because if you are talking about them, they are important. Anyone feel we nee another ice pad at the Courtice South Arena? How about a new baseball diamond in Ward 1?
We have an opportunity to create a council that will "lead the way" and make Clarington a safe, healthy, and sustainable community.
